- 1873 Seated Liberty Half Dollar. Arrows. Proof-65 Cameo (PCGS). Secure Holder. Blended slate-gray and reddish-russet patina are noted for both sides, the latter color ringing the peripheries in a more-or-less mottled fashion. More direct angles also call forth delicate blue and lavender highlights that are largely confined to the borders. Smooth surfaces and a sharp strike are easily seen, this despite the fact that the toning dominates the outward appearance. Detracting blemishes are not seen, confirming the validity of the Gem grade from PCGS.<br /> Derisively known as the "Crime of '73," the Mint Act of February 12, 1873 is an omnibus bill that, among other things, mandated a slight weight increase for the Half Dollar from 12.44 grams to 12.50 grams. To signify this change, Mint officials added arrows to the obverse flanking the date, as had already been done in 1853-1855 to denote another weight change for this denomination. There are only two proof issues of the Arrows, Motto type, the first-year 1873 (550 pieces produced) being somewhat rarer than the 1874 in today's market, especially in high grades.
