- 1873-S Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Arrows. WB-101, Die Pair WB-1, the only known dies. Rarity-3+. MS-62 (NGC).
The satiny, boldly lustrous surfaces are aglow with champagne-gold and peach toning highlights on the obverse, the reverse with deeper shades of both. Sharply struck and choice for the grade with no readily apparent marks. Surprisingly scarce in Mint State despite its somewhat sizeable mintage of 228,000 pieces. Much of that number saw heavy commercial duty in the San Francisco Bay area to the point where even a nice AU example of the date should be considered scarce. Indeed, NGC has certified just 10 examples of the date in the Uncirculated range, none of those above MS-65 or below MS-62, as here. Scarce and attractive -- what every collector desires!
PCGS# 6345.
Provenance: From our (Stack's) session of Auction '85, July 1985, lot 728; our (Stack's) sale of the David Queller Collection, October 2002, lot 650; and our sale of the Dick Osburn Collection, August 2011, lot 7116.
NGC Census: 2; 8 finer (MS-65 finest).
