- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State a, which represents a remarriage of these dies, after the reverse was used to strike Die State b examples of the 1805 B-5 variety. An important offering for advanced early quarter variety enthusiasts, and a highlight of the NorthEast Collection. Bright, lustrous surfaces show ample evidence of a frosty to modestly semi-reflective finish. The central reverse is brilliant, but otherwise we note pretty iridescent toning in champagne-rose and powder blue that is boldest around the obverse periphery. The only mentionable softness is confined to the eagle's head, neck, and the clouds at central reverse, otherwise we note a pleasingly bold strike for the type. Faint hairlines are a bit more pronounced on the obverse, on which side we also note a few tiny planchet drift marks (as made) on Liberty's bust that serve as useful provenance markers. Free of sizeable marks and pleasingly smooth in hand for the assigned grade.<p>This scarce die pairing of the 1806-dated quarter issue shares its obverse with the 1806 B-7, B-8 and B-10, and its reverse with the 1806 B-5. The present example is ranked CC#1 for the 1806 Browning-6 variety in the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach census; the NGC MS-64 from Heritage's August 2001 Atlanta Signature Sale listed as CC#1 in the 2008 Tompkins census is a misattributed B-10, and the Three Sisters coin listed with a grade of 60- in the Rea et al. census has been cleaned. The offered example, therefore, is the only confirmed Mint State 1806 B-6 quarter, and it is eagerly awaiting inclusion in another specialized collection, in which it will surely serve as a leading highlight.
