详细说明: This is an absolutely outstanding Superb Gem Proof 1898 eagle with bold medium golden-yellow color on both sides and subtle pale rose highlights evident as the surfaces dip into a light. The strike is full and the satiny devices appear to float atop deeply reflective fields. The technical quality and eye appeal of this exceptional Proof-67 Deep Cameo specimen place this among the finest Proof 1898 eagles extant.<p>The reported mintage for the issue is 67 pieces, a total commensurate with most other Proof Liberty Head eagles from the 1890s. Numismatic scholars are generally in agreement with Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth (2008) accounting for only 30 to 40 coins extant, the experts at <em>PCGS CoinFacts</em> offering an estimate of 40 to 50 survivors, and John W. Dannreuther (2018) giving an updated estimate of 30 to 35 known. Judging by certified population data, most known examples are clustered at the Proof-64 and Proof-65 grade levels - rarely does a Superb Gem such as this make an appearance. Indeed, this is the finest specimen in the Dannreuther list of "Significant Examples" for the issue published in 2018.
