Here is another highly collectible and popular Pattern type. With over 100 Pattern varieties listed for 1873, most of which are for the newly authorized Trade dollar, this year makes a very cool subset of Patterns for collectors to specialize. The J-1315 features Bailey's Seated Liberty design (which seems to combine elements from William Barber and James B. Longacre's Seated Liberty and Seated Indian Princess designs from 1869-1871). Liberty is seated, facing left holding a liberty cap on a pole, supporting a globe with a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY. Agricultural products are seen on the background, flanking the central design. The reverse has a perched eagle, wings spread as if to take off in flight, standing on a shield, arrows and an olive branch in its talons. IN GOD WE TRUST on a ribbon below, with the fineness and weight below that. Struck in silver with a reeded edge, this pattern is listed as Rarity-4, and it is estimated that about 50 were struck for sale to collectors along with the other Trade dollar patterns of the year. This is a highly contrasted example. The fields are deeply reflective and have a bold depth of clarity and cleanliness. The devices are sharp and thickly frosted, creating a bold Cameo contrast with the watery fields. The lightest dusting of toning attests to the outstanding originality. The eye appeal is sensational! PCGS 1, NGC 4. It is hard to tell what the Population in PR64 CAM is as none appear on the Population Report and this one is included in the 12 that are reported in PR64 without designation. A non-CAM PR64 CAC sold in December 2020 for $7,800 and we sold a PR63 CAM in our July 2021 Regency auction for $10,281. We love this type and think this near-GEM belongs in a great set of patterns or to augment a Proof Trade Dollar collection. Good luck.
