- FROM THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST HALF DOLLARS Among the very finest of the date and a truly GLORIOUS GEM example of this conditionally challenging final year of the design type. While somewhat available in lower Mint State grades, up to and including MS64, there are but a half a dozen examples in GEM grade at PCGS. In 1836, Christian Gobrecht modified the John Reich and William Kneass's Capped Bust design for use on the newly installed steam press. This 1839 is a popular transitional year, switching from the Capped Bust design to the Seated Liberty. A fabulous example of this date! A brilliant, billowing, and satiny mint luster accentuates a soft, clear gold patina that clings to the rims and throughout the stars, a trifle stronger on the reverse. The swirling cartwheel brilliance provides a sensational contrast between the satiny fields and the sharply formed devices. The strike is crisp, displaying full, complete definition to Liberty's hair curls, drapery folds, and eagle's feathers. The star centers and dentils are fully defined. While this is a type that is often seen lackluster (even in Mint State grades), with splotchy or dark toning, this is a fabulous looking GEM of the first order! Ex Heritage, January 2015, lot 4131; Legend Rare Coin Auctions' Regency Auction XXII, July 2017, lot 195 (as PCGS MS65 CAC OGH). PCGS 5, NGC 6, CAC 3. This is the sole MS65+ at either service, and PCGS has graded just a single MS66 finer. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $50,000, and five years ago, as an MS65 CAC, this coin realized $38,775. The single MS66 was from the Pogue Collection and has not sold in auction since its appearance over six years ago. This is a VERY RARE and important opportunity for the advanced type or date collector. Do not let it slip away. Good luck! Cert. Number 9768622 PCGS # 6179
