- 1932 United States Assay Commission Medal. By John R. Sinnock and Adam Pietz. JK AC-76a a, Baker A-348. Rarity-4. Bronze. Unsigned. MS-67 (NGC).
51 mm. Variant without the designer's "signature" J R SINNOCK inscribed along the left obverse border. Far finer than the Choice Mint State example in the Keusch Collection (Stack's, November 2008, lot 5328), this exceptional Superb Gem offers silky smooth surfaces and delightful deep antique gold patina. The design features are smartly impressed. One of the more popular Assay Commission medals, the obverse design of the 1932 was prepared in commemoration of the bicentennial of George Washington's birth in 1732. Only 25 bronze impressions were produced, all of which were delivered on February 17 of that year. Also known by the attribution of Baker A-348, this type is eagerly sought by both Assay Commission medal specialists and collectors of Washingtoniana.
Provenance: From the Collection of Leonard Augsburger, co-author of The Secret History of the First U.S. Mint.
