GREAT BRITAIN. Crown, 1687 Year TERTIO. London Mint. James II. PCGS AU-58. S-3407; Dav-3779; KM-463. Though there are some light adjustment marks on the obverse, this early milled Crown has very little evidence of handling. All details remain strong, and a nice gray luster displays a subtle, muted appearance. James inherited the throne when his brother Charles II died. Despite England being a Protestant country since the time of Henry VIII, James II had converted to Catholicism, and this conversion was the cause of a great deal of strife. Despite being initially popular, that wore off very quickly when Parliament refused to pass measures he proposed. When James attempted to simply decree his acts, Parliament was even more disturbed on the dual grounds of politics and religion. When James had a son 1788 that was presumably to be raised Catholic, his daughter and husband William of Orange were invited to invade England and take the throne. After being deposed James was landed in Ireland by the French and for period rose an insurrection that was put down in 1690. James lived the rest of his life in exile in France and was buried there. During his time in Ireland several of the most interesting numismatic issues were created of what has become known as “gunmoney.” Minted in Limerick and Dublin, and struck in pewter, these issues would have been redeemed for silver with interest should James II have retaken the English throne.
