FROM THE PERFECTION COLLECTION OF CAPPED BUST HALF DOLLARS For the first 45 years of a federally produced coinage system in the United States, the mint in Philadelphia produced all the coins needed for commerce. By the 1830s the economy and territory grew sufficiently to require a branch mint in New Orleans (as well as branches in North Carolina and Georgia to convert the native gold being mined into coins). The New Orleans mint began coining operations in 1838, after being established by an act of Congress in 1835. The number of half dollars struck that first year were limited to 20 proofs that are today among the most sought after classic rarities in the U.S. series. The 1839-O saw a limited mintage of 178,976 pieces, and the vast majority of them went straight into circulation. Precious few were saved in Mint State, with just a dozen examples graded MS65 or finer at PCGS. This is a fabulous example of this important and historical issue. A strong, vibrant cartwheel luster swirls boldly all over this sharply struck and totally original toned GEM. This example was struck from a cracked state of the dies, with spidery peripheral cracks that add to the charm of this southern condition rarity. A gentle dusting of iridescent tone has a slightly dappled appearance at the periphery on the obverse while it is soft and pastel at the center and on the reverse. The is an incredible specimen, worthy of the FINEST of collections! PCGS 7, NGC 7, CAC 3. There are two in MS65+, the other example having sold in the 2021 ANA auction for $87,888. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $97,500. PCGS has graded five finer, and the last MS66 sold in the May 2016 Pogue Auction for nearly $100,000 and the market for Capped Bust half dollars is stronger today. We expect this coin to bring a very strong hammer price when the gavel falls. Do not take this opportunity for granted, who knows when another example will appear in auction again! Cert.
