- Tompkins Die Stage 3 (early)/2, Rea et al. Die State b (early). Glints of frosty luster are more pronounced on the obverse, which exhibits a light silver center within a halo of steel-russet and iridescent multicolored peripheral toning. The more uniform (and also subdued) reverse is dressed in even medium pewter gray. Both sides are boldly to sharply struck with only a trace of high point wear and touch of glossiness to the texture betraying light handling. A newcomer to the Condition Census for this key variety of the 1819-dated quarter issue, this coin is not included in either the 2008 Tompkins or 2010 Rea et al. listings, but would be tied for CC#3 in the former, tied for CC#4 in the latter.
Representing an early state of Tompkins Obverse Die Stage 3, the die is cracked only from the lower right border, through star 12, into the back of Liberty's bust. This would later become a bisecting crack (see the example in the next lot). The reverse is cracked through the letter U in UNITED to the eagle's right wing.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: Within six months of purchasing the prior lot this intriguing coin appeared at auction. Two high grade 1819 B-1s within a few months of each other - what was I to do? Buy it as well, of course, especially since it is a different die stage. The perfect excuse to add another nice coin to my collection.
