- Tompkins Die Stage 1/1, Rea et al. Die State P. This Browning number represents the second of two uses of the obverse die (the other is B-2), and the first of two uses of this Small Letters reverse (which went on to coin quarters of the 1831 B-4 variety). Writing in his 2008 reference on this series, our consignor highlights the significance of this offering for the 1831 Browning-3 pairing when he reports:
This is a very rare die marriage and it will be difficult to locate, especially in choice higher grades. Most collectors will have to be satisfied with a VF or perhaps an EF example.
With solid AU quality as certified by PCGS, the present example offers an uncommon amount of bold to sharp striking detail in a survivor of this variety. Blushes of steel-olive iridescence visit the peripheries and enhance otherwise warm pearl gay surfaces, both sides with iridescent undertones of powder blue and pinkish-apricot. Much frosty luster remains and also greets the viewer aided by direct lighting. The reverse is rotated a few degrees clockwise from normal coin alignment.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The B-3 is a difficult variety to locate in high grade with possibly only one Uncirculated example known, followed by a handful in AU. After having a lower grade example in my collection for more than 10 years, I was finally able to upgrade it with this coin. The local dealer I bought it from showed it to me a couple of years before I purchased it, when it was still uncertified.
