1801 S-213 R2. PCGS graded MS-64 Brown.Lustrous tan and light brown blending to darker steel brown on the highpoints. The fields are satiny and there are hints of very faded mint color peeking through between die cracks in the field before the face. The only notable marks are a thin wisp of steel brown toning in the field above the upper end of the hair ribbon, a speck of crud at the dentils left of the L in LIBERTY, and a small spot of dark crud in the dentils over the right side of the D in UNITED. M-LDS, Breen state VI, with extensive die cracks from BERTY into the head and field before the face plus strong die clashmarks at the bottom of the reverse. This cent is plated in the Newcomb reference on the cents of 1801-1803, the obverse is plated in Dr. Sheldon's Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy, and this is the plate coin for the variety in the 1991 Noyes reference. Graded MS62 and CC#1 in the Bland census. Noyes says MS60 net AU55 and CC#1, his photo #21759. Our grade is MS62. This piece is the finest known by at least 10 points in both census lists. The attribution and Doug Bird Collection provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 1; none finer. The only MS graded at PCGS.(PCGS # 36236) Value $20,000 - UP
