- 1852 Seated Liberty Silver Dollar. Restrike. Proof-65 (NGC). One of the classic rarities in American numismatics, the 1852 Seated Dollar was struck in extremely limited numbers for circulation, reportedly 1,100 pieces only. Most were melted at the time as the price of silver ran up compared to gold during the wild monetary swings caused by the influx of gold coming east from the California Gold Rush. Of those 1852 Original Silver Dollars that survive, about 50 have been certified as wholesome combining the NGC and PCGS census data, others exist with varying problems that are not part of this tiny number, but all survivors are highly coveted. As we know today, the demand for this date was high as early collectors sought to obtain an 1852 Silver Dollar--with none to be had as of the late 1850s. Therefore, the Philadelphia Mint solved the problem and was more accommodating than usual, by coining a number of 1852 Proof Restrikes for collector consumption of the day. The later Proofs were struck at the Philadelphia Mint, using a known reverse die reserved for Proof coinage, notably by the die rust visible within the feathers in the lower left wing of the eagle. From this modest Restrike issue, there are between 30 and 35 pieces that survive today.<br /> The present coin has exceptional eye appeal, with well frosted central devices which are enhanced further by orange-gold toning that also shows small areas of blue near the rims. Highly reflective mirror fields confirm the Proof status at a glance. Surface quality is exceptional as there are no distracting waves of hairlines or handling marks. For future identification there is a tiny planchet void below the right wing tip of touching the top arrow shaft. A combined total of five coins have been certified at this level between NGC and PCGS, with none seen finer by either service.
