- 1787 Fugio Copper. Club Rays. Newman 2-C, W-6630. Rarity-6. Concave Ends, FUCIO, UNITED STATES. VF-35 (PCGS). 172.85 grains. A Condition Census calibre specimen of this rare and distinctive variety, the only collectible Concave Ends variety, though fewer than 25 are thought to exist. Most specimens are low grade or have serious problems. The Retz coin was graded VG-8 (PCGS) and seemed quite reasonable at $6,169. The Ford coin, itself a Condition Census level piece and quite similar to this one in terms of sharpness, brought $27,600 a decade ago. This example exhibits nice light olive and gold surfaces, nearly smooth and showing no major post-striking issues. A few scattered planchet striations are seen, one above IN of MIND, another at 17 of the date, smaller one at right reverse periphery, none serious. FUCIO is bold and easily seen, better struck in that area than the Ford coin. Rob Retz reported a single Unc (not seen by him, reported from a long-standing East Coast collection), the nice EF Breen plate coin leads the list, three other EFs and a number of VFs, most with some manner of flaw or other. This likely deserves consideration around fifth or sixth finest known, ranking high when judged on surface and eye appeal. This would upgrade most serious Fugio collections.
