- 1787 New Jersey Copper. Maris 46-e, W-5250. Rarity-1. Outlined Shield. AU-55 (PCGS).
145.7 grains. A gem specimen of this common die combination that nearly always shows bold die clashing of the reverse design in the obverse fields; in fact, only a few non-clashed, early die state examples survive today, as the dies apparently clashed early on and multiple times in the die pairing, creating a growing failure of the obverse die. The reverse die held up remarkably well, showing little evidence of the clashing. Though the die combination clearly lasted through a huge mintage, the die combination clearly had its issues, given the clashing and the existence of multiply struck examples and at least one brockage of reverse "e" that we offered as part of Collection SLT in January 2012. The present piece is from Die State 4. Chestnut brown, smooth and displaying the mint gloss associated with very high grade early copper, this coin is as fine as one is wont to readily find. High quality combines with an illustrious pedigree chain to create a very desirable coin!
