- Any Proof coin struck prior to 1858 is a major rarity with paltry original mintages. The 1854 half dollar has an original mintage of 20 pieces! Today, this GEM Proof PR65 is tied for FINEST graded at PCGS. A spectacular rarity that is usually only offered when major collections are offered (recent sales include the Joseph C. Thomas, Gene Gardner, and Eric P. Newman Collections). This is a beautifully toned and exceptional quality example. Rich, watery mirrored reflection flashes on glassy, icy smooth surfaces. The fields are free of distracting marks or hairlines and the eye appeal is further enhanced by a graceful blush of rich color on both sides. Peripheral blue and lilac toning soften to rose and apricot. The fields have a richer pearly-dove silver color that brings all the iridescent hues together. Generally well struck, there is some minor weakness at Liberty's head and on the eagle's talon, typical of these early Proofs. The eye appeal is excellent and we are not sure why CAC did not bean this GEM. We see nothing that should have precluded grading. PCGS 2, NGC 6. Clearly there has to be some duplication in the NGC data. The last PCGS-graded example sold in April 2009, realizing $27,600 in a Great Recession induced low point in the market. Before that, a different example sold for $34,500 in August 2006. More recently a PCGS PR64 sold in June 2014 for $32,900. The current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $45,000 and there are NONE FINER at PCGS. An extremely RARE coin that is rarely offered for sale. Do not let this coin slip your grasp! Good luck! Cert. Number 40882041 PCGS # 6407.00
