- Tompkins Die Stage 3/4, Rea et al. Die State a. A pretty mauve-gray, cobalt blue, antique gold, and pinkish-silver example that reveals the most vivid and varied colors when viewed with the aid of direct lighting. Such viewing angles also call forth strong mint luster in a frosty texture. This is a sharply struck and minimally circulated coin, the reverse rotated more than 20 degrees clockwise from normal coin alignment; such rotation is common for this Browning number.
The Mint delivered 286,000 quarters during calendar year 1834, and it used two obverse and four reverse dies in five pairings for the 1834-dated issue. Since at least one of these die pairings (B-3) is believed to have been struck in 1835, the actual mintage from 1834-dated dies is somewhat higher than the calendar year figure.
The 1834 Browning-1 was struck after the 1834 B-2, with which it shares its obverse. The reverse of this variety is the only one in the series with two pale gules in the shield and no period after the letter C in the denomination; it was earlier used in the 1833 B-2 pairing. The present example still shows evidence of repunching to the legend, but only at the letters O and F in OF.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: For many years I only carried a LDS example of this variety in my collection, but when this beauty showed up it was time to include the EDS as well. Nice coin!
