- BB Die State III. Of the six different die marriages of 1802/1 silver dollar, the BB-235 is the rarest, garnering the Rarity-5 rating. This PCGS AU-53 is firmly ensconced in the Condition Census, as enumerated in both Q. David Bowers 2013 reference The Encyclopedia of United States Silver Dollars: 1794-1804 and Stephen J. Herrman's Auction Prices Realized for Early Silver Dollars, 1794-1803. It is tied for CC#2 in the Herrman census based on its old PCGS grade of AU-50, but as a PCGS AU-53 it is now tied for CC#2. In the Bowers reference this is the "Orlando Sale Specimen," CC#3 as PCGS AU-50, now CC#2 as PCGS AU-53.
Rich golden-copper patina blankets both sides, the toning moderate to allow ready appreciation of remaining luster. This piece is universally sharp in strike for an early dollar with an impressively smooth appearance throughout. A faint, ancient scratch inside star 2 on the obverse is buried in the toning and will require magnification to discern; it is mentioned here solely as a useful provenance marker. Eye appealing with superior quality example for this very rare early dollar die marriage.
