One of the finer examples of this date to survive, and a very rare issue in any grade with a mintage of just 62,000 pieces. The initial appearance of this one is precisely correct, classic light silver surfaces with a mix of golden-russet toning that includes a minor streak from the final star on the obverse clear across to the rock, likely where the fold of an envelope top was in long ago storage. On the reverse the color is well matched to the obverse with slight yellow-gold hues mixing into the silver surfaces, with a trivial streak extending up from the eagle's head, and these toning variations hallmark this particular coin. As to the strike it is bold indeed, with clear star centers, crisp folds on Liberty's dress and all the feathers and talons of the eagle well defined. A strong loupe will find a few minor handling marks commensurate for the grade and a couple are mentioned for future identification of this particular coin. There is a small nick on the top of Liberty's right arm near her shoulder and a hidden mark on the post of the F in HALF at the center. Perhaps a dozen or so merit a mint state grade with some duplication likely in the Population Report and Census and this one falls within the top half of the mint state ones known. Considering the attractive light toning and surface quality, it is a coin that anyone will be justifiably proud of owning and one of the classic rarities of the Seated half dollar series.
