- THE BOYLSTON COLLECTION CLASSIC RARITY and one of an estimated 300-350 extant specimens. With a mintage of just 59,000 coins, this date is hard to find in any grade, but particularly so in higher circulated and mint state conditions. Flashy, white cartwheel luster is frosty and generously distributed over remarkably well preserved surfaces. Free of contact marks and just some light breaks in luster in the field are noted. While sharply defined motifs are present on 90% of the coin there is some striking weakness noted on the top of Liberty’s head and the corresponding left leg feathers on the eagle on the reverse. WB-3a, Rarity-5. Known as the Railroad Track Reverse after it’s appearance with the heavy impression of dentils beneath the TE of STATES. This variety is highly sought after by collectors and although the cause of the damage is unknown, it has been the subject of many theories. The vast majority of known examples of this die state are BELOW Fine condition! PCGS 7, NGC 7. Listed in the PCGS Price Guide for $13,500. The last AU58 NGC example traded for $7,800 in April 2018, however, it was not this Rarity-5 variety. Who knows where the hammer will fall when this coin crosses the block, but with it’s cool variety coupled with the rarity, we expect a hefty bid will be necessary to take this desirable piece home! Best of luck! Cert. Number 18114121 PCGS # 6347.00
