- GRENADA. Bit, ND (c. 1787). PCGS VG-08 Gold Shield. 1.61 gms. KM-1; Prid-1. "G" countermark on an 1/11th cut of an 8 Reales, originally valued at 9 Pence but then reduced to 6 Pence in 1787. Countermark BOLD VERY FINE; Host coin Estimate: $300 - $400. Provenance: Ex: DNW Auction #103 October 1, 2012 where it was sold as a contemporary forgery. Though possibly a contemporary counterfeit as previously cataloged it is the belief of this cataloger based on the large variance of weights and punch linking of the countermark to full weight examples that any piece sharing this particular punch is genuine. These pieces were not cut in a single motion, but rather multiple cuts in succession. This process makes it impossible to make accurate cuts every time to the proper weight standard.
