- 1844 Liberty Seated Silver Dollar. OC-1. Rarity-2. Misplaced Date, Doubled Die Obverse. EF-45 (PCGS).
This is an impressive 1844 Liberty Seated dollar that will appeal to specialists and type collectors alike. Certified EF-45 by PCGS, it displays considerable mint luster throughout the protected regions and overall sharp definition. The eye appeal is strong in-hand, with a pearlescent complexion of lavender-grey hues blanketing each side. Sharply struck and free from any notable abrasions.
The 1844 Liberty Seated dollar is among the most intriguing issues of the series. The original mintage of 20,000 pieces was accomplished by just a single die pair, designated OC-1 by specialists Dick Osburn and Brian Cushing. The obverse die features a radically misplaced date in Liberty's lower drapery as well as dramatic doubling to the stripes of the shield. These features make this issue very popular with collectors and have earned the 1844 OC-1 dollar a designation as a Top 30 Variety from Osburn and Cushing. Just 1000 examples are thought to remain, and the present example is certainly an attractive, problem free, and exceptional survivor.
Provenance: From the William B. Martin Collection.
PCGS# 6930. NGC ID: 24YE.
