- One of the greatest design types of all of American numismatics, the Pan-Pac $50 is a true classic! You really cannot help but have a true sense of WONDER when holding one of these rarities with its classical design of the helmeted head of Minvera, the goddess of wisdom on the obverse and the wise owl on the reverse. There is so much romance associated with these legendary pieces, not the least of which is the occasion for which they were coined, the Panama Pacific Exposition and the celebration of the opening of the Panama Canal, a stunning feat in it’s own right. Of the original authorized mintage of 1,500 coins just 645 survived the melting pot. Its status as one of the 100 Greatest U.S. Coins in the book by Jeff Garrett and Ron Guth make this a truly important and desired type coin. The quality here is HIGH END and undeniable, bordering on the GEM classification. There are no serous issues to be found anywhere. Overall, the surfaces are clean and smooth. Its really a lot of fun to look over these big beautiful coins. The luster is typical and is decent. Both sides are a totally original Pan Pac gold color. There are NO spots or discolorations. The details are well struck. The eye appeal is very nice! PCGS 146, NGC 160, CAC 49. There are 13 in MS64+ at PCGS. Clearly there has to be a ton of duplication of submissions as the total Populations at PCGS and NGC are above the mintage of 645. The only PCGS/CAC example to sell in auction brought $102,000 in March 2020 and the current PCGS Price Guide value is listed at $130,000. Even in MS64 (not "+") the CAC CPG value is $119,200 and it jumps to $188,800 in MS65. A great coin, indeed an American CLASSIC, that is always in demand from collectors. Bid accordingly. Cert.
