- GREAT BRITAIN. Ryal, ND (1466-67). London Mint; im: crown. Edward IV (first reign). PCGS AU-53.
S-1950; Fr-132; N-1549. Light coinage, type VII. Weight: 7.59 gms. Obverse: Edward, holding sword and shield, standing facing in ship; Є on banner at stern, rose on hull; Reverse: Rose over sun with fleurs, crowns, and lions; large trefoils in spandrels. A type later imitated in the Lowlands, this broad gold issue presents evenly handled surfaces that remain entirely problem-free and appealing.
Edward IV was a central figure in the War of the Roses, and much of English monarchial life at this time was dominated by the conflict. Edward was the York claimant to the throne, having inherited it from his father Richard Duke of York. His central opponent was Henry VI. His claim to the throne was secured after his victory at the Battle of Towton shortly after being crowned. His first reign was ruled by concerns of consolidating power and by 1470 he was deeply unpopular. Lancastrian forces assembled against him, and he was forced to flee to what is now Belgium in exile. The second reign of Henry VI was plagued by infighting and Edward returned to London only a few months later unopposed restoring his rule for the rest of his life.
Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
