- 1860 Pattern Half Eagle. Judd-272, Pollock-320. Rarity-6-. Proof-63 BN (PCGS). 1864 Pattern Seated Liberty Quarter. Judd-387, Pollock-455. Rarity-6+. Proof-65 BN (NGC). A bust of Liberty faces right on the obverse with 13 stars around the border and the date 1860 below. Liberty is wearing a cap ornamented with three stars and a ribbon inscribed LIBERTY crosses her shoulder. The reverse exhibits an eagle with outstretched wings clutching a bundle of three arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right. A scroll in the eagle's beak is inscribed with the Latin motto E PLURIBUS UNUM. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is above and the denomination FIVE DOLLARS is below. Struck in copper with a reeded edge.<br /> Copper strikings of this type are known on both thick and thin planchets, although the PCGS insert does not attribute this particular specimen further than denoting that it is an example of Judd-272. Intricately defined from a full strike, both sides exhibit subtle rose-orange undertones to dominant golden-brown patina. A probable near-Gem were the surfaces a bit more vibrant in appearance. The planchets used to prepare this half eagle pattern type are the size (in diameter) of those used to strike regular issue eagles, this experiment apparently designed as an exercise to reduce counterfeiting.
