- 1863-S Liberty Seated Half Dime. MS-64 (NGC). CAC.
Offered is a beautiful, sharply struck example of the 1863-S, falling just short of Gem quality in our estimation. Satiny, mottled champagne-gold toning is on both sides. 100,000 pieces were struck, most of which were placed into circulation at face value at the time.
There was a curious monetary situation on the West Coast during the Civil War. Silver and gold coins circulated at par, and freely, while federal Legal Tender notes traded at a deep discount. In contrast, in the East, silver coins disappeared in the spring of 1862, due to hoarding, and issues produced after that time were retained by the Treasury or sold at a sharp premium in relation to Legal Tender notes. Although the mintage of the 1863-S was generous, at the time there was no known numismatic interest in collecting such pieces. Today, examples in the presently offered condition are seldom seen.
