- A lovely example that really needs to be seen to be fully appreciated. The obverse is lightly toned in a veil of iridescent champagne-gold. The reverse is more boldly patinated, with dominant sandy-rose yielding to steel blue and, at the peripheral devices, glints of silvery brilliance. The surfaces on both sides are virtually flawless and showcase an exacting strike that has imparted razor sharp definition throughout the design. The obverse is noticeably cameo in finish, but the toning on the reverse precludes appreciation of such a finish and, by extension, also precludes a CAM designation from PCGS. This is not a concern, merely a statement of fact, as this is an expertly produced, carefully preserved and visually stunning Ultra Gem Proof that will please even the most discerning numismatist.<p>The advent of the new Barber quarter design in 1892 caused a run at the Mint on Proofs, where 1,245 coins were produced in this format; the next year the love affair was over and the Proof mintage had dropped considerably, never again to brush the 1,000-piece mark for the duration of this series.
