- A beautiful nearly GEM caliber example of this RARE PROOF-ONLY variety. Highly reflective fields show a wealth of original mint red and lots of wonderful violet overtones which highlight the extremely crisp details of Ms. Liberty’s hair, stars and wreath. When rotated in a light, the mirrors really do flash and show off additional hues of teal and blue. We note a few minor ticks and a fleck here or there, but nothing distracting and will forever serve to identify this well provenanced specimen. Before being in the Twin Leaf Collection (sold in July 2015), this coin started out in the Charles Zug Collection; sold in the S. H. Chapman sale of November 1907, lot 1119; Dr. Henry Beckwith Collection, S.H. Chapman sale of April 1923, lot 100; William Morgan; Morgenthau & Co. sale of June 1932, lot 333; James Macallister; T. James Clarke; Ted Naftzger; Eric Streiner; Denis Loring; Twin Leaf Collection since 1994. In the July 2015 sale of the Twin Leaf Collection, this coin realized $24,675. The pedigree chain of this special PR coin includes a real “who’s who” of high end early American copper coins (noted scholar and collector John Adams noted that the Beckwith Collection was the “finest collection of high condition cents of all time.”) T. James Clarke is well known for his amazing early U.S. coins and Colonial issues. Ted Naftzger is synonymous with QUALITY large cents. And finally, the Twin Leaf Collection will long be remembered as one of the all-time greatest collections of middle and late date large cents ever assembled. PCGS 3, NGC 1, CAC 2. Only one other coin has appeared at auction, and that was back in the January 2011 sale of the Dan Holmes Collection, a non-CAC con that realized $18,975. Keep in mind that the N-14 is a PR-only variety, of which Walter Breen enumerated 10 different examples in his Proof Encyclopedia (of which THIS is the plate coin). More recent study indicates that there are perhaps 12 known in all grades. This is a very under appreciated rarity, and in its beautiful state of preservation, should be worth more! Perhaps one day collectors will truly learn to appreciate these very special coins! Cert. Number 6914408 PCGS # 1959
