- While this well produced and readily obtainable issue is a mainstay in Franklin half dollar collections and type sets, most collectors have had to settle for a 1953-D that grades no finer than MS-65. Most of the mintage was roughly handled by Mint and Treasury Department personnel, and finding an example that is as smooth and close to pristine as the Superb Gem offered here is a very challenging task. Intensely lustrous and attractively toned, the most vivid and varied colors gravitate toward the rims. Lovely coin.
