ILLUSTRIOUS, PREMIUM GEM with a POP 1 when sporting the + designation and clearly worthy of the moniker! Intense cartwheel luster is not diminished in any way by the rich color layered in navy, apricot, dusty rose, seafoam green and egg nog hues. Exquisitely struck motifs with full delineation of the design details. A few random ticks and breaks in luster are noted on the obverse under strong magnification.
Although the 1883 Hawaiian half dollar had the largest mintage of all of the 1883 dated coinage, with nearly 700,000 pieces coined, when, in 1900, the US Territory Hawaii became a state, the legal tender status of the Hawaiian coinage was removed resulting in the majority of the coins being melted. When this occurred, the half dollar became one of the scarcer issues of the genre.
PCGS 15 (A single coin is graded MS-65+), NGC 0, CAC 6 (just one example with the + designation). Just 4 coins grade finer at PCGS, 3 MS66 graded pieces and the finest grading MS66+. There are also 4 NGC pieces graded MS66. One surmises that there are some resubmissions in the mix and the populations are inflated. PCGS Price Guide value is $11,000. This coin last appeared at auction in May of 2012 where it sold for $8,913. Opportunities to obtain this glorious issue in GEM status are few and far between, so keep that bidder paddle up if you wish to go home with this great specimen.
