- 1805 Capped Bust Right Quarter Eagle. BD-1, the only known dies. Rarity-4. AU-58 (NGC). CAC. A very pleasing example of this date and one of just 1,781 pieces reported struck. The strike is a bit soft at the centers and the faint wear is accentuated by the softness on the obverse, but this is a very nice piece overall. Outstanding mint luster remains on both sides, except for on the highest points of the obverse, while the reverse is bold and attractive in this respect. Light adjustment marks have not fully struck out and are evident through the central devices on the reverse, though most details are respectably defined. Very nice eye appeal is the order of the day here, and it is unusual to see early quarter eagles with this much original luster. This date is represented by just a single die pair, the reverse of which was used to coin all quarter eagles of 1806, 1807 and, in addition, all of the 150,000 1807 dimes, making it one of the best utilized dies of its time. The 1805 quarter eagle is generally considered among the more common dates of the series, behind the 1807 that had a vastly larger mintage. However, it is interesting to note that John Dannreuther's survey of auction appearances from 1990 to 2005 included fewer appearances of the 1805 quarter eagle than the far more famous 1796 No Stars variety.
