- Tompkins Die Stage 1/3, Rea et al. Die State P. Tompkins Plate Coin. Hard and frosty surfaces are lightly toned in silver gray and olive, the obverse a tad more boldly so than the reverse. This is a fully struck coin, and one that would probably have secured an AU-58 grade were there a bit more luster.
Quarter dollar production at the Philadelphia Mint soared to 1,952,000 coins in 1835, the highest total achieved for this denomination during any calendar year of coinage from its inception in 1796 until 1853. Some of these coins were dated 1834, so the actual mintage from 1835-dated dies is a bit less than reported. Even so, the Mint required eight die pairings to achieve the mintage of the 1835-dated issue.
The Browning-1 was struck from the same obverse used in the 1835 B-2 and B-3 pairings, and it shares its reverse with the 1834 B-3, which was struck later. There is also a remarriage of the 1835 B-1, after the obverse was employed in the B-2 and B-3 pairings. The early die state example offered here, without the obverse crack at the digit 5 in the date, was struck during the initial marriage of the B-1 dies.
Steve M. Tompkins Commentary: The Logan sale in November 2002 was held in conjunction with the Fall Baltimore Expo that has been a staple of the major numismatic shows throughout my collecting career. I picked up this lovely coin on eBay the Sunday before the show and the sale; it was mailed while I was traveling to Baltimore from Seattle. Luckily the Logan example was only a VF, so I passed on it at the sale, to be delighted by this coin once I returned home.
