- GUATEMALA. 8 Reales, 1789-M. Charles IV (1788-1808). NGC AU-53. KM-45; FC-34; El-44. Bust of Charles III, legend reads "Carolus IV"; "IV" Ordinal over "III". Interesting to note that Freeman Craig lists an unconfirmed and doubtful posthumous issue of Charles III of this date. Clearly the dies were prepared, but later word was received of the passing of the king and altered the dies by punching the ordinal of the new king "IV" over the previous "III". Well struck with good definition of the minute details and lovely deep tone showing a plethora of hues. An intriguing example worthy of further research.
