- Obv: A bearded bust of Abraham Lincoln faces right with the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA around the border and the date 1866 below. Rev: A laurel wreath surrounds the denomination 5 CENTS with the motto IN GOD WE TRUST inscribed along the upper border. Frosty to semi-reflective surfaces are further enhanced by delicate iridescent toning in pinkish-silver. Some light porosity in the planchet is as made and only identifiable under close inspection with a loupe. No significant post-production blemishes are seen, and the strike detail is sharp throughout the design.
This die pairing is the only U.S. Mint pattern type that features "Honest Abe" Lincoln, and important as such. Examples were also struck in copper, Judd-487, and bronze, Judd-488 - all are rare, with Judd-486 in nickel offered here having an extant population of only nine or 10 specimens. Appealing to both pattern specialists and advanced Lincolniana collectors, this fleeting opportunity will result in spirited bidding and a strong price.
