- 1856 Silver Three-Cent Piece. Proof-65 (PCGS). CAC. A sparkling silver gray Gem with lively neon blue and gold iridescence that makes its presence known under a bright light source. The strike is sharp for a Type II silver three-cents, though some lightness is noted at a few reverse stars; as a whole this series is not well-struck regardless of date or strike format. From an unlisted but no doubt small proof mintage for the date, perhaps on the order of several dozen pieces; the PCGS website suggests just 60 or so are known in all grades. Appearing for the first time at public sale since 1954, the present Gem will be widely received by an appreciative audience when it crosses the auction block.

Numismatic Reflections by Q. David Bowers
Another lovely coin, this Proof 1856 will attract wide attention. My estimate of the number known is far fewer than just 60--based upon the number I have seen and offered over the years. Added to the desirability of this coin on its own, the Type II design 1854-1858 is virtually impossible to obtain sharply struck in circulation strike format, placing an extra aura of desirability on this needle-sharp proof.
