- Tompkins Die Stage 2/2, Rea et al. Die State b. This third (!) offering for the normally elusive 1825/4/2 Browning-1 quarter from the Tompkins Reference Collection represents the latest die state of this pairing. Chipping of the obverse die has filled the area under the flag of the digit 5 in the date, while on the reverse the viewer aided by magnification will discern a light peripheral crack through the left serifs of the letter E in UNITED that extends into the field before the scroll. This is a pale pewter gray example with all major design elements discernible, and some bolder detail in the recesses of the central design elements. A pair of pin scratches from the lower left and right reverse border extend into the olive branch and arrows, respectively.<p><strong>Steve M. Tompkins Commentary:</strong> The extremely rare LDS showing the chipping in the upper part of the 5 in the date is difficult to come by. I had a lower grade example that I pictured in my book, but passed it on to another eager collector when I purchased the coin in the preceding lot.
