- THE TERRA PISTACIA COLLECTION Among the FINEST KNOWN of this piece de caprice. Clearly someone at the mint was having some fun. The obverse is the famed "Liberty by the Seashore" design that was used on certain 1875 Trade and Commercial dollar patterns, muled with a Proof No Motto reverse die. Struck on a silver Trade Dollar planchet (weighing 419.8 grains, the trade dollar contained 420 grains), with a reeded edge, this is a high Rarity-7+ with about five examples known in all grades. We love this coin! It is one of our favorites of the entire sale. A real GEM caliber old time collection toning, as you would expect on an Eliasberg coin. This coin has a fascinating detail on the obverse, which has intrigued catalogers for years, as the flags blow in the opposite direction of other wind in the sails. It is also interesting to contemplate mint policy was to destroy the old dies after 1866, clearly this was not done. The technical qualities are all there. Highly reflective mirrored fields are watery and brilliant, highlighting the gorgeous slate and tangerine-rose gold patina. Offering a razor sharp strike on both sides, this coin has a near Cameo contrast on both sides. Known examples include: 1: PCGS PR66 CAM: ex Randolph S. Rothschild Collection, Stack's, October 2003, lot 1105; Bob R. Simpson Collection 2: PCGS PR65+ CAC: ex Harold P. Newlin Collection, John Haseltine, April 1883, lot 355; John Work Garrett Collection; Johns Hopkins University; Selections of the John W. Garrett Collection, Stack's May 1976, lot 655; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Core Collection; Harry W. Bass, Jr. Core Collection, Part II, Heritage, January 2023, lot 9092 3: PCGS PR64 CAC: Likely J.M. Clapp Collection; Clapp Estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Jr., via Stack's in 1942; Louis E. Eliasberg Jr. Collection, Bowers & Merena, May 1996, lot 283; THE PRESENT COIN 4: PCGS PR64: Stack's Bowers, February 2019, lot 1211 5: PCGS PR62: Possibly ex King Farouk of Egypt; Kurt Krueger's “ANA Sale”, July 1984, lot 660; Heritage, April 2006, lot 1855; Richard Jewell Collection, Stack’s Bowers August 2011, lot 7526; Stack’s Bowers, November 2012 lot 3221; Goldberg, June 2014, lot 1642; Heritage, January 2016, lot 5740. PCGS 2, NGC 0, CAC 1. Back in the Eliasberg sale, this coin brought $25,300! Even then folks understood the rarity and importance of this GEM. The current PCGS Price Guide value is $35,000. NOTE: the Bass coin sold for $48,000 in January 2023. This is a MAJOR rarity and important pattern issue that is RARELY SEEN! Do not let this opportunity pass you by! Good luck. Cert.
