- R-7+ (4-6 minted). Struck from regular proof 1869 gold dollar dies in aluminum with a reeded edge. Intense contrast captivates the viewer. Bold, deep, highly reflective fields beam against the frosted sharply struck design elements. A real GEM, this coin is devoid of any of the issues that plague coins struck in aluminum, including oxidation, corrosion, etc. These die trials in aluminum were produced for sale to VIPs at the mint, and are incredibly rare. In many instances, fewer than half a dozen sets were produced, and over the years, broken up. Not only are they popularly collected by pattern specialists, but in some cases advanced collectors of U.S. gold dollars would include these pattern issues to augment their collections. These are RARER than the regular issue Proof Gold dollar of 1869, and can be had for about the same amount. PCGS 1, NGC 0, CAC 1. Not sold in auction in over five years, the last time an example sold was in January 2013, realizing $21,150 and the current CU is listed at $23,500. What a great pattern rarity for any collector to add to their holdings! Cert. Number 10707435 PCGS # 389218
