Only 6,600 $3 gold pieces were struck in San Francisco in 1855, and most disappeared into circulation and lost to today's collectors. PCGS CoinFacts estimates 400 survive in all grades today. This one is very pleasing with generous amounts of flashy luster remaining in the protected areas. The devices are well struck and despite the light circulation, retain strong definition on both sides. Commensurate with its time in commercial channels, we note some unobtrusive traces of contact, that have zero impact on the outstanding visual allure. RARE in AU grades, and virtually unobtainable in Mint State, this is a fantastic coin for the collector.
PCGS 44, NGC 46. The most recent example sold in November 2021 for $3,600 and the current Collectors Universe value is $4,500. The last NGC AU50 sold over five years ago! These clearly do not appear with frequency and will see strong bidding from the $3 gold specialist.
