- 1874 Liberty Seated Half Dollar. Arrows. Proof-64 Cameo (PCGS).
Dusted with light silver-copper iridescence, the centers are framed by bolder and more vivid blue and reddish-gold peripheral toning. Fully struck throughout with playful interaction between satiny devices and mirrored fields. The weight of the half dollar was modified in 1873 when the Act of February 12 mandated an increase from 12.44 grams to 12.50 grams. The Mint once again decided to add arrows to the obverse before and after the date for coins struck to the new weight standard. This second Arrows Liberty Seated half dollar type remained in production only in 1873 and 1874, after which the basic Motto type returned, albeit with the weight standard as mandated in 1873. One of just two Proof issues of this short-lived design, the 1874 was produced to the extent of 700 pieces, survivors of which have long been popular for specimen type purposes. With the combination of cameo finish and Choice surface preservation that it possesses the coin offered here is decidedly scarce.

PCGS Population: 25; 7 finer in this category (Proof-66 Cameo finest).
