- 1928 United States Assay Commission Medal. Bronze. 51 mm. By John R. Sinnock and Adam Pietz. JK AC-72a. Rarity-4. Edge Incuse B.G. SHIELDS. MS-65 (NGC).
Gorgeous golden-brown surfaces are boldly defined overall. There is slight variation to the color in the right obverse field -- similar to that seen on the Julian-Keusch plate specimen -- that seems to be the only impediment to an even higher grade.
The Philadelphia Mint received an order for 50 bronze medals for the 1928 Assay Commission meeting on February 3 of that year, which it filled on February 10. The offered example was originally presented to B.G. Shields, an employee at the U.S. Assay Office in New York, who was also the originally recipient of the 1922 medal in this sale.
Provenance: From the Richard Jewell Collection. Earlier from Heritage's Long Beach Signature Auction of September 2006, lot 6611. Lot tag and collector tag with attribution notation included.
