- Offered is a dazzling condition rarity from the later Barber half dollar series. Smooth satin surfaces are highly lustrous and devoid of even trivial blemishes. A dusting of iridescent pinkish-silver patina engages both sides and provides additional eye appeal. Strike is often a (serious) problem for circulation strike half dollars of this design type, but here we are thrilled to note bold definition throughout the eagle's plumage and talons on the reverse and razor sharp detail elsewhere. Truly an exquisite piece, and one that will impress even the most fickle of numismatists.
Writing in the second edition of his Guide Book of Barber Silver Coins authored for Whitman, Q. David Bowers offers the accurate, if brief comment that the 1906-S in Gem Mint State is "another 20th-century rarity in this grade." Indeed, from a mintage of 1,740,154 pieces only a handful of other survivors rival the Shireman-Gardner specimen in terms of both technical quality and eye appeal. It is every bit as impressive as the Larry H. Miller coin in PCGS OGH/CAC that brought $19,200 in December 2020 - our only other offering for this issue in stellar Superb Gem Mint State preservation going back at least 15 years.
