- The Newman 13-X is perhaps the classic Fugio type coin, easily obtained in high grades as the largest proportion of the Bank of New York hoard. Offered is a richly original AU example with steely-olive and russet patina, faint gold and reddish-rose highlights flashing into view as the surfaces rotate under a light. The impression is a bit tight to 5 o'clock on the obverse, 1 o'clock on the reverse, but only portions of the border denticulation are appreciably off the flan. We do note isolated peripheral softness, most notably at upper and lower left obverse, where portions of the sun and some of the letters in MIND and BUSINESS are indistinct, but in general this is a boldly to sharply defined coin at the assigned grade level. It is also a pleasingly smooth one, the surfaces a tad rough, but with only a few faint marks, mostly on the reverse, although even then none are worthy of individual attention.<p>The Bank of New York Hoard was discovered numismatically in the 1850s. When inventoried in 1948, it was found to contain 1,641 Fugio cents, 726 of which were of the Newman 13-X attribution. The coins from this hoard, especially the Neman 13-Xs, have been a blessing to modern type collectors as they provide ample opportunity to acquire an attractive Fugio cent at price points that are accessible to many buyers. At the certified AU level, this one is particularly nice and will prove popular with bidders.
