- 1875 Pattern Sailor Head Twenty-Cent Piece. Judd-1392, Pollock-1535. Rarity-6-. Proof-64 Cameo (NGC). CAC. William Barber's "Sailor Head" design, the obverse depicts a left-facing bust of Liberty with 13 stars arranged around the border and the date 1875 below. Liberty is wearing a coronet inscribed LIBERTY, before which is a small ornamental spray. In the center of the reverse is a shield with the numeral 20 incuse in its center. Rays, arrows and olive sprigs emanate from around the shield. The legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the border, and the word CENTS is below. Struck in silver with a plain edge. Traces of russet-gold and blue are seen, particularly at the peripheries. Sharply struck, and expectably blemish-free for the near-Gem assessment, this piece would fit comfortably into an advanced pattern set.
