1850 Braided Hair Cent. N-21. Rarity-2. Noyes Die State B/B (N-10). MS-64+ RD (NGC). Frosty mint orange surfaces display lively cartwheel activity and boldly struck devices. Other than some scattered flecks, no noticeable marks are present. Choice for the grade and ideally suited to represent the type in a high-grade U.S. type set. It is interesting to note that large copper cents of 1850 regularly are found with a large amount of mint red, but those of the year previous, 1849, are hardly ever seen this way. Part of the answer is due to hoard coins of 1850, but perhaps there was some difference in the metal alloy as well that caused, in general, cents of the 1840s to tone more rapidly than those of the 1850s.
