Some observers suggest that these were often given as gifts during the late 19th century, but at any rate, proof gold dollars of the era were struck in very limited numbers by today's standards, with cameo examples representing the near-pinnacle of art for the series. Impeccable contrast will be seen as the hallmark of this 1885, and the reverse features slightly better reflectivity than the obverse. Contrary to current acerbic notions, these are available without harsh impairments, and only some fragile hairlines drifting across the mirrors bar a full Gem grade in this case. A prominent strike-through thread attached to the "T" of UNITED can easily identify the provenance for future generations (scotia).
