- Tompkins Die Stage 1/5, Rea et al. Die State d, Rarity-6. Although the Browning-2 is the most readily obtainable die marriage of the 1825-dated quarter issue, the terminal die state with a full cud, represented here, is the most challenging for collectors to acquire. This originally toned example offers pleasing circulated cameo contrast between pewter gray fields and lighter dove gray motifs. The upper right obverse is worn smooth, due to being located opposite the reverse cud, but other areas retain at least partially outline definition to the major design elements. Surfaces are smooth and uncommonly well composed for having this extensive circulation.
Controversy surrounds this die state, as opinions differ on whether a full cud exists for this variety, or such pieces are merely worn retained cuds (Die Stage 1/4, Die State c). Page 193 of the 2010 Rea-Peterson-Karoleff-Kovach reference Early Quarter Dollars of the United States Mint: 1796-1838 includes a full discussion of this controversy, to which readers are referred. The authors, however, end their discussion with a warning that all bidders should take to heart: "In any event, be prepared to pay a significant premium to obtain one of these late states - Cud or not!"
