- An amazing example, the highest graded Crosby 3-B Nova Constellatio that we have offered in at least 15 years. It is equally impressive for its striking quality and level of preservation. Both sides are fully defined from a nicely centered impression, even the leaves in the reverse wreath separated and crisp where allowed by die state. The lower obverse border just slightly approaches the tops of the letters in NOVA, to no detriment whatsoever. (PCGS has incorrectly mounted this coin upside down, with NOVA appearing at 12 o'clock in the holder.) The texture is hard, satiny and impressively smooth; close inspection with a loupe is required to discern a couple of faint carbon spots drifting through the first letter S in STATES and the top of the rays, as well as a few equally inconsequential reverse marks close in to the left base of the cursive letter U. The color is lovely in a gentle marbling of steel-olive and autumn-brown shades.<p>Although Crosby 3-B is a plentiful die variety by Nova Constellatio copper standards, the present example offers remarkable and rare Choice Mint State preservation. The die state is early, the obverse with only a trace of the rusting within the rays from 5:30 to 10 o'clock that, when heavy, is so often associated with this attribution. The familiar reverse break within the lower left wreath, above the digits 17 in the date, is readily apparent.
