Condition Rarity 1880 Trade Dollar Popular Proof-Only issue 1880 Trade Dollar. Proof-66 (PCGS). CAC. An exquisite premium Gem to represent this eagerly sought trade dollar issue. Mottled olive-russet, burnt-orange, deep rose and steel-blue peripheral highlights give way to softer pewter-gray toward the centers. A lively reflective finish and fully rendered design elements are readily appreciable on exceptionally well preserved surfaces. 1880 is the third year in which the Philadelphia Mint struck the trade dollar solely in Proof format, and the second in which it was the only coinage facility to produce examples of this denomination. Survivors from a mintage of 1,987 pieces are always in demand, not only for inclusion in trade dollar date sets, but also as Proof type candidates. This is an exceptionally well produced and preserved specimen that will please even the most discerning numismatist. It ranks among the finest certified survivors.
