A highly elusive die pairing, the rarest of the issue after only JR-5. Writing in the 2015 reference <em>Bust Dime Variety Identification Guide</em>, Winston Zack, Louis Scuderi and Michael Sherrill account for only 15 or so examples of the 1803 JR-1, the best of which are two EFs and a trio of VFs. The present example may be near the bottom of the census, but most major design elements are boldly outlined and the major diagnostics of the attribution are clear: the digit 3 in the date tilts left and star 1 on the reverse is repunched. Subtle powder blue and antique gold undertones backlight warm steel-gray patina, the surfaces with no notable marks apart from a thin obverse scratch in the field above Liberty's bust. A find for early dime variety enthusiasts.
